The Branch for International Surgery Research Awardee 2010
and team win innovation's Grand Challenges Canada
-
CONGRATULATIONS to Mark Ansermino, Jacqueline Hudson Excerpt from The Globe and Mail -
Among the two Canadian winners was a University of British Columbia invention that transforms a simple cell phone - common even in the poorest parts of sub-Saharan Africa - into a portable blood-oxygen tester; the second home-grown winner was a Hospital for Sick Children creation of "pre-natal sprinkles" to get critically needed, but unusually terrible-tasting, calcium into the diets of pregnant women.
The "Phone Oximeter," was developed by a team led by Mark Ansermino, a scientist and associate professor at the University of British Columbia. It will be field-tested in Stellenbosch, South Africa, where partners in the project are already working to identify mothers at risk because of high blood pressure.
"Midwives will use this to screen women during pregnancy," Mr. Ansermino said, shortly after the winners were announced. He said the call for innovative ideas, partially funded by Grand Challenges Canada was "just a fantastic thing for researchers in Canada."
The 77 finalists were winnowed down from more than 600 original entries in an unconventional attempt to gather bold ideas from around the globe and create a "pool of innovators" to address one of the most persistent development tragedies. Called "Saving Lives at Birth: A Grand Challenge for Development," it is jointly funded by Grand Challengers Canada, the United States Agency for International Development, Norway's Foreign Ministry, the World Bank, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
"We wanted to mobilize a global community of innovators," said Ms. Clinton, who has taken a personal interest in the effort.
"Seed" grants of roughly $250,000 each were awarded to 19 of the finalists Thursday. -

Xiaoxie Wang (supervisor Dr. Garth Warnock, General Surgery) successfully defended her PhD thesis on May 9th.
The newly minted Dr. Wang was the first to show, during her PhD studies, that the inhibitory action of the T-cell co-signalling molecule B7-H4 can be used to prevent pancreatic islet rejection during allogeneic transplantation.
Amazingly, the recipients become tolerant of their grafts and do not require any further immune suppression.
Andrew Ming-Lum (supervisor Dr. Alice Mui, General Surgery) has won the first place prize of $1500 in UBC's inaugural Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. Participants have just three minutes to explain the breadth and significance of their thesis project to a non-specialist audience. Over 100 graduate students from all disciplines competed in series of elimination heats, and the university-wide final was held May 10th. For the occasion, Andrew wore a tie (something that he said he only ever wears at weddings and funerals).

Dr. Graham Bryce wins Courage to Come Back award
-
Graham Bryce, Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery,
has won the Courage to Come Back Award in the medical category from Coast Mental Health.
The Courage To Come Back Awards honour British Columbians who have overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges and reach out to help others --
"individuals who offer hope and inspire us with their courage, strength, and drive to give back to their communities."
One award is given in each of these categories: Addiction, Medical, Mental Health, Physical Rehabilitation, Social Adversity, and Youth.
All the recipients have their stories told in The Province newspaper, in an interview with Deborra Hope on Global BC’s News, and in stories
on News1130 radio.
Dr. Bryce now spends his time advocating for hearing health, mostly on a volunteer basis. He helped launch the early hearing program in B.C. that ensures that every baby's hearing be screened at birth and another program designed to prevent the epidemic of noise-induced hearing loss, according to The Province.
Dr. Bryce also became a board member for the Western Institute for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, where he worked to help the hard of hearing improve their communication and access to society.
Despite left-side paralysis and loss of vision in his left eye, Dr. Bryce continued work he had begun before his stroke, chairing the fundraising committee for the B.C. Family Hearing Resource Society, became involved in the Balance and Dizziness Society and joined the Faculty of Medicine, teaching ethics and the community. He is also on the board of directors for the Greater Vancouver Community Services Society.
"I've had to build a whole new life," he told The Province. "It was a change in my identity. My life is very different from what I anticipated. People don't anticipate this happening and until you're there and you face whatever challenges, you don't know how you're going to respond."

Congratulations to:
Dr. Nathaniel Bell, a postdoctoral research fellow within the Section of Trauma Services, was awarded the very prestigious CIHR Fellowship in the July 2010 competition. Dr. Bell's research will focus on quality of care following injury in British Columbia and the Yukon and the use of linked administrative data sources to evaluate care. Dr Bell's application ranked within the top 4% of this year's application pool of 768 entries. This is an exciting step in the maturation of research within the Department of Surgery and in building long-term research capacity in understanding the determinants that increase risk of injury and prolong recovery during reintegration back into work and society.
Dr. Bell received his Ph.D. from Simon Fraser University, where he applied health geomatics and population health approaches to the study of injury epidemiology. During his fellowship, Dr. Bell will work under the mentorship of Professor Boris Sobolev and Dr. Richard Simons (General Surgery). If you would like information on this project or are interested in contact Dr. Bell he can be reached at nathaniel.bell@vch.ca
Congratulations to:
Clara Tan-Tam (General Surgery, PGY5) who gave an oral presentation on her work on the use of mesenchymal stem cells to improve islet transplant survival at last week's XXIII International Congress of the Transplantation Society. This meeting is the largest gathering of clinicians and scientists focused on organ transplantation and occur every two years.
Two of Dr. Bruce Verchere (General Surgery) students, Kate Potter (MD-PhD) and Jacques Cortades (MSc) who worked together to submit an entry to the Canada-wide Transplantation Grand Challenge essay competition. Kate and Jacques shared the $4000 first prize with a General Surgery PGY3 resident, Jon Yeung, from the University of Toronto. Both teams addressed the problem of endogenous retroviruses in porcine tissue/organ grafts. (The third prize of $1000 was also won by a General Surgery resident, Minh-Tri Nguyen, from McGill University. No entries were received from UBC residents. Perhaps next year?)
Drs. Bin Zheng, Adam Meneghetti, Neely Panton and Karim Qayumi (General Surgery and CESEI) for their Royal College Medical Education Research Grant entitled "Eye-tracking as an Educational Tool for Improving Laparoscopic Performance for Surgical Residents". [ Aka....keeping an eye on residents? :-) ]
Congratulations to:
Dr. Richard Finley (Thoracic Surgery) and his co-investigators (Dr. John Mayo, Joanne Clifton MSc, Dr. John Yee, Dr. Ken Evans, Dr. John English, Dr. Larry Lynd) for their grant from the VGH/UBC Hospital Foundation to support their longitudinal study of patients who have undergone Thoracoscopic Resection for Subcentimetre lung nodules after localization using percutaneously inserted platinum microcoil under CT guidance.
Dr. Finley and his team developed this innovative method for marking lung nodules and is also conducting a randomized control trial to determine if thoracoscopic resection of subcentimetre lung nodules after localization using percutaneously inserted platinum microcoils under CT guidance reduces rate of conversion to open thoracotomy from 50% to 10%. The RCT is also supported by a grant from the BC Lung Association.
Congratulations to:
Dr. Amjad Alwaal who successfully defended his M.Sc. in Surgery thesis. Dr. Alwaal is currently completing his Urology residency and will be returning to King Abdul Aziz University in Saudi Arabia to assume his position as an assistant professor. The insufficient pancreatic β cell derived insulin in T1D patients is exacerbated by overproduction of cell derived glucagon. Dr. Ehses will study the possibility that elevated glucagon levels are due to an increase in pancreatic α cell numbers induced by gp130 receptor stimulation.
- Dr. Brad Hoffman (General Surgery) who also received a Canucks for Kids Fund Catalyst Grant to study the role of Baf45d and nucleosome remodeling in endocrine cell specification.
It has been a good month for research in General Surgery. Congratulations to:

Dr. Garth Warnock Awarded Meritorious Service Medal
In recognition of a huge break-through in diabetes treatment, the Canadian Government awarded Dr. Garth Warnock and his research team a prestigious Meritorious Service Medal (civil division), which distinguishes achievements that bring honour to the country.
With six former colleagues, Dr. Warnock, head of the Department of Surgery at UBC and VGH and co-director of the Ike Barber Human Islet Transplant Laboratory -part of Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute-developed a new diabetes treatment internationally known as the Edmonton Protocol.
This innovative technique won them one of the 45 Medals presented on April 21, 2005 by the Governor General of Canada.
"Upon learning of this recognition, I was surprised that the Governor General recognized my contributions to diabetes research," said Dr. Warnock. "My deepest sense of satisfaction
comes from knowing that I can work here at VCH with our team to continue to develop this important area of care for more British Columbians and Canadians."
"We are very proud of Dr. Warnock and his continued clinical and research commitments to help advance diabetes treatment, locally and internationally," says Janet Davidson, Chief Operating Officer at Vancouver Acute. "This prestigious recognition is a true testament to the deep impact that his work has on people living with diabetes worldwide."
Drs. Kneteman, Korbutt, Lakey, Rajotte, Ryan, Shapiro's, and Warnock's revolutionary technique consists of injecting healthy pancreatic islet cells into diabetics to restore control of blood glucose without further need for daily insulin injections. The procedure also introduced a new combination of drugs to prevent the body from rejecting the transplanted cells. The advanced treatment pioneered by this team of doctors has received widespread international acclaim and is now being taught by health facilities around the world.
