Background and Focus

Dr. Evans was appointed to the UBC Department of Surgery in 2005 in the position of Medical Manager, Trauma Services at the Vancouver General Hospital where he is maintains a strong clinical and academic interest in trauma, general surgery and critical care medicine.

Dr. Evans earned an honours B.A. in biology from Princeton University before completing his Medical Degree and General Surgery Residency at McGill University. He completed a Critical Care Medicine fellowship at the University of Toronto and then moved to the McGill University Health Centre as Assistant Professor of Surgery and Critical Care Associate at the Montreal General Hospital. He directed the Adult Trauma Program and the Montreal General Hospital Trauma Acute Care General Surgery Service from 1997-2005.

Dr. Evans founded the Canadian Trauma Trials Collaboration in 2001 - a national multidisciplinary, multi-centre trauma research group - and served as its chair until 2006. He also chaired the Trauma/Critical Care Committee of the Canadian Association of General Surgeons. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and serves on the General Surgery examination board. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and has served as Quebec Chair for the ACS Committee on Trauma. He has served on the executive of the Trauma Association of Canada and remains active in Canadian trauma research.

Dr. Evans has participated in several clinical trials. He has received awards for post-graduate teaching, and has given numerous invited lectures, talks and presentations in the trauma field and critical care medicine. He has authored and co-authored several journal articles, book chapters and abstracts.
