- Drs. Wally Chung and Madeleine Chung recognized 17 yrs ago that the Dept of Surgery lacked a department-wide research forum so they endowed a fund to support what we call the Chung Research Day.
Chung Research Day has become the premier event of the academic calendar and is the one and only time each year the Dept of Surgery gathers as a whole to celebrate its research endeavors.

- Dr. Graham Clay (#35); 42 years' service, honoured as follows: Dr. M. Graham Clay, Clinical Professor Emeritus, was in the third UBC Medical School class, graduating in 1956. Following his Internship at Toronto Western Hospital, he completed general surgery training in Vancouver hospitals and in London, England. He practiced exclusively in Vancouver, where he taught MD Undergraduate and Postgraduate students with enthusiasm. Dr. Clay helped to develop the Screening Mammography Program of British Columbia. His leadership in community service included many years as a member of the Board of the BC Medical Association, 8 years as a member of the BC Cancer Agency Board of Directors, and 2 years on the Vancouver General Hospital Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Medical Appeal Board of British Columbia for 13 years, chairing that Board for 6 years, and he served as Medical Director of the Clinical Practice Subunit of General Surgery at VGH for 6 years.

- This conference exposed students to the wide variety of UBC and community health initiatives underway and explore further community and student engagement in global health. Over two days, participants gained significant exposure to global health initiatives and insight into the field with a wide range of health experts. Highlights included opening remarks by UBC president Stephen Toope; Posters, displays and networking opportunities with UBC and community health organizations and a full day of workshops with experts from the field.
